Philosophies and What a 5th Grader told me about Nine–Released 9/9/9

I wonder how long Tim Burton has waited so that this movie could be released on yesterday’s date.  I would guess that he has had the story in mind for a few years.  On second thought, maybe he just decided a couple of years ago to save the number nine gunny sack character.  I do not know what they are really called.  One of my 5th graders saw it last night.  He gave me a brief synopsis about the first part of the story–how some of the gunny sack characters (spoiler alert) died.

Originally, there are the gunny sack characters–one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.  About 4 are destroyed early on, but I will not tell you who they are.  (My 5th grader did.  But I pleaded with him to not give away the ending. (more…)

“Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” Movie Review

I saw “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” starring Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Jason Bateman this past Saturday night at a 5:25 pm showing at Movies 8 (Yeah, I’m cheap, I know) in Provo, Utah. I was thoroughly delighted by the film. (more…)

Here’s the content review. Even though it’s rated “G,” I found some content that could possibly be offensive to some. (more…)

“Meet the Robinsons” Review

I saw “Meet the Robinsons” at the Provo Towne Centre on Thursday, April 19th. Pixar Animation Studios never ceases to amaze me with its stunning visual representations. The opening sequence and specifically the texture of some pillars on the exterior of a building looked nothing less than photographic in quality.

It is the practice in my reviews to lean away from a synopsis of the storyline and toward a review of possible offensive content. However, (more…)

“Night at the Museum” Review

Admittedly, I didn’t see this movie until it hit the discount theatres. I vaguely remember hearing good things about it, but until I saw it last weekend I had no idea what it was about. It’s probably on DVD by now.

It stars Ben Stiller as a single dad who is trying to get some stable employment. He has one young son and a girlfriend who is very concerned that he is financially settled before he tries to hitch up with anybody including her I presume. He is desperate for employment and gets employed as a night watchman at a local museum. (more…)
