“The Dance” Review

I went to a matinee showing of “The Dance” at the Wynnsong (Carmike Cinemas) in Provo on April 7, 2007. It opened in theatres the night before. There were 11 people in the theatre.

This is a very polished movie, and I believe the budget for it was under $300,000. The story follows three couples at various stages of life. One is

Zoe [pronounced Zoe-ee] (Kari Hawker) and Cameron, (KC Clyde) who are just beginning college life. Another involves a divorcee Alyson (Monique Lanier) with two young children and a 36 year old never-been-married bachelor Howard (Scott Christopher). The last couple have been married for about 25 years, the husband Charles played by Michael Flynn and the wife played by Joyce Cohen. Flynn co-produced the film with McKay Daines, the primary producer and writer. Being a “divorced person”, the highlight of the film was the divorcee character Alyson.

The eccentric character in the film is the DeeJay “Wolfman” (Frank Gerrish). The events take place all in one night and are interweaved quite nicely.

Though the film content overall is fairly clean, there are some potentially offensive things.

Here they are:

Violence: There’s a fist fight altercation in a bar. Don’t worry–the two main characters don’t order alcohol. They order two diet Cokes with limes.

Profanity: Howard says “he**” quietly to the Wolfman. The word “asses” is quoted in a biblical or Shakespeare reference by the man from the older married couple. The woman of the youngest couple makes a reference to “making love” in a joking way. The daughter of the divorcee makes two references to “making out” in a playful joking way.

Immorality: There are a few scenes (about 3 or 4 times) where the young woman of the young college couple is seen wearing a low-cut sleeveless dress (shows cleavage). Her character is not a member of the LDS faith and is not “in” with the modesty standards.

I recommend the film but caution against little children just because it deals with themes thay may be more interesting to adults. Save their boredom and send them to an animated feature while you watch it.

The movie is very polished and heart-warming…hope you like it.
